Thaya River

The Thaya (czech 'Dyje’) originates near Schweiggers, a village in the low mountain range of the Waldviertel. Following a meandering course, the Thaya merges with the Mährische Thaya in Raabs an der Thaya. The river has a total length of 235,4 km and runs along the national border of the Austrian an Czech Republic. In Hohenau the Thaya flows into the March. The river basin amounts to 12.786 km².

Numerous weir systems, which were established some hundreds of years ago, characterize the course of the Thaya River. The result is a sequence of semi-natural sections and reservoirs.

The Thaya and especially the water power of the Thaya was at all times an important element for the local industry. In 1935 the river was ponded and consecutively the resorvoir near Vranov was constructed. The largest reservoirs are those of Nové Mlýny, between Doní Dunaiovice and Hustopeče.
